The workout: This 25-minute point guard ball handling workout is designed for solo players to build tighter control, ball protection, and clean change of direction before adding top-end speed. By systematically training stationary wraps, pocket protection, shiftiness, and lateral footwork, you establish a secure handle that survives heavy defensive pressure. Maintain low hips and keep your eyes up throughout.

A great point guard doesn't just dribble fast—they control the game's tempo by protecting the ball and changing directions at will. This structured solo workout targets the exact mechanics needed to tighten your pocket control, shift defenders, and transition smoothly from footwork to handle. Execute every rep with deliberate force, keeping your off-hand active and your posture balanced.

  1. Cousy Drill30 secRetreat with active, low steps while keeping your body turned to shield the ball from an imaginary defender.
  2. Dribble Combo Dynamic30 secVary your dribble height during the combo; keep your off-hand up to simulate active protection.

Change of Direction Angles

  2. V-Dribbling Dynamic30 secPush the ball wide on each side step; synchronize your lateral footwork with the widest point of the dribble.
4

Guard Lateral Footwork

5 min · Connect your handle to lateral deceleration and balance, building the athletic base needed for quick stops.
  1. Single Leg Lateral Jump30 secLand softly with a loaded hip, holding your balance for a split second before leaping laterally.
  2. Diagonal Shuffles30 secStay in a low defensive stance; push off your back foot and keep your core stable.
  3. Quick Hands 230 secMove your hands as fast as possible to catch and redirect the ball; maintain a low, athletic base.

How to progress

Progress by first increasing the force of each dribble, aiming to snap the ball back into your hand as quickly as possible. Once you can complete all rounds with matched right-left control and zero panic dribbles, widen your stance to increase the shiftiness of your crossovers. Only add high-speed movement when your stationary pocket protection is completely secure.
