The workout: Five high-intensity blocks in 25 minutes — develop soft touch around the rim, master your gather footwork, learn to evade defenders with Eurosteps and floaters, and use power stops to finish strong through contact.
To score consistently at the rim, you need more than just height; you need elite touch, creative footwork, and body control. I designed this 25-minute routine to build soft-touch muscle memory and give you the tactical finishes required against taller defenders. Whether you are a guard playing in traffic or a big man securing the paint, these drills translate directly to game situations.
1Touch & Rhythm Warm-up
2 min · Groove your touch and wake up your hands close to the glass. - Touch Shots5 makes each sideFocus entirely on a soft, high-release arc that barely grazes the net without hitting the rim hard.
- Mikan drill (all variations)30 secKeep the ball high above your shoulders, don't let it drop, and find a rhythm off the glass.
2Drive & Gather Foundation
2 min · Prep your handle and synchronize your steps off the bounce. - Lay ups of the dribble4 makes each sideExecute a sharp crossover dribble at the wing, then explode downhill into a strong layup off the dribble.
- 2 steps lay ups w. a dribble4 makes each sideTime your dribble to hit the floor exactly as your lead foot plants, then gather securely with two hands.
3Deceptive Rim Finishes
2 min · Learn to evade help defenders and float over height. - Eurostep4 makes each sideSell the first step hard in one direction to freeze the defender, then aggressively leap laterally onto the second step.
- Floater5 makesPush off your inside foot, launch the ball high with a soft finger-tip release, and do not follow through with a snap.
4Contact & Power Counters
2 min · Finish strong in a crowded paint when you cannot outrun the defense. - Power stop5 makesLand on both feet simultaneously with a wide, balanced base to absorb contact before exploding up.
- Up & under5 makesSell the upward shot fake completely with your eyes and the ball, then step through low past the defender.
5Rim Protection Finisher
2 min · Use the basket to shield the ball from trailing block attempts. - Reverse lay up5 makesUse the rim as a shield against imaginary shot-blockers, spinning the ball gently off the backboard.
How to progress
To progress this workout, increase your approach speed to a full sprint before initiating your gather. You can also add a defender (or a partner holding a contact pad) to apply physical pressure right as you enter your footwork.

build a full basketball training program around it.
