Coach Dan Speaks:

Master the Power Stop: Explosive Footwork & Finishing

This high-intensity drill combines aggressive ball handling with elite footwork to help you become a more efficient scorer in the paint. Ideal for guards and wings, the Power Stop focuses on the critical transition from a full-speed drive to a controlled, balanced jump stop. By mastering this deceleration, you will learn to create separation, avoid offensive fouls, and finish strong through contact.

How to Perform This Drill

  1. Setup: Start at the top of the key with a basketball, ready to attack the basket. Set a timer for one minute.
  2. Attack: Drive hard toward the elbow or paint using a maximum of two explosive dribbles. Simulate blowing past your primary defender.
  3. Execute the Stop: After your second dribble, perform a "power stop" (jump stop) by planting both feet simultaneously on the court. You must land in a low, athletic stance.
  4. Protect: As you land, keep your inside shoulder and hip directed toward the imaginary defender to shield the basketball.
  5. Finish: Rise up immediately for a jump shot or layup, maintaining vertical balance.
  6. Repeat: Retrieve your rebound, sprint back to the top of the key, and switch driving directions (left vs. right). Aim to make 9 to 10 shots before the buzzer sounds.

Why This Drill Works

In a game situation, your ability to stop is just as important as your ability to go. This drill builds the neuromuscular control required to decelerate instantly from a sprint, preventing charging fouls and traveling violations. By forcing a two-foot landing, you establish a wide, stable base that allows you to pivot, absorb contact from collapsing defenders, and power through your shot with consistent mechanics.

Pro Tips

  • Stick the Landing: Don't drift. When you execute the power stop, imagine your feet are nailed to the floor. You should land on the balls of your feet with your knees bent, ready to explode upward.
  • Chin the Ball: Upon landing, immediately bring the ball to your chin or "toughness pocket" with elbows out. Do not expose the ball low where a defender can swipe it.
  • Sell the Drive: Your first step must be explosive. If you don't attack with game-speed intensity, the stop won't simulate real game physics.
  • Stay Vertical: When you jump for the shot, go straight up and down. Fading away negates the power base you just created with your footwork.
