Jump hook

How To Perform This Basketball Drill

Put 1 minute on clock an each type of finishing.
Start on the right corner and after rebound you should relocate to another corner.
To initiate the jump hook turn your left shoulder towards the defender so your body is sideways to both the defender and the basket.
Jump straight up in the air, while carrying the ball over your head, with your right arm extended upwards, at the top of the jump you will use your wrist to power the shot towards the hoop.
Teach points: Beginning in the triple threat position.
This is a great way to get a shot off against a taller defender or in traffic (will be used when within 5 to 10 feet of the hoop).

Coach Dan Speaks:

The Jump Hook: Develop an Unstoppable Interior Finish

This dynamic finishing drill combines ball-handling agility with refined post-scoring mechanics to help you score consistently over taller defenders. While the jump hook is a staple for centers and power forwards, it is an essential tool for any player driving into traffic. By adding a relocation element before the shot, this drill forces you to organize your feet quickly and maintain balance under simulated fatigue, replicating the chaotic nature of scoring in the paint.

How to Perform This Drill

  1. Setup: Start at the top of the key in a triple threat position with one minute on the clock.
  2. Relocate: Dribble hard toward the sideline corner, simulating a drive to escape pressure or improve a passing angle.
  3. Attack the Paint: Immediately change direction and power dribble into the "kill zone" (5–10 feet from the hoop).
  4. Align: As you gather the ball, turn your non-shooting shoulder firmly toward the imaginary defender so your body is perpendicular to the basket.
  5. Elevate: Jump straight up off two feet, extending the ball high over your head with your shooting arm fully extended.
  6. Finish: At the apex of your jump, flick your wrist to hook the shot over your head, aiming for a soft touch off the backboard or a swish.

Why This Drill Works

In a game, you rarely get to stand still and setup a post move; you are constantly moving, cutting, and battling for position. This drill bridges the gap between ball handling and finishing by forcing you to transition from a live dribble directly into a controlled shot. By mastering the sideways alignment and vertical extension of the jump hook, you utilize your body as a shield, making the shot nearly impossible to block without the defender committing a foul.

Pro Tips

  • Chin the Ball: When you gather the ball after your dribble, keep it high at chin-level or above. Bringing the ball down to your waist gives smaller guards a chance to strip it before you shoot.
  • Jump Vertically: Do not fade away. Jump straight up to maximize your height advantage and draw contact; fading away creates a difficult angle and bails out the defense.
  • Snap the Wrist: The power of the hook shot comes from the legs, but the accuracy comes from the wrist. Ensure you have a sharp, clean follow-through directed at your target.
  • Sell the Drive: During the relocation phase, move at game speed. The faster you move before the shot, the more separation you create for the finish.
