Master the Low Pick Up Layup: Elite Finishing Drill

Finishing at the rim isn't just about vertical leap; it's about angles, leverage, and ball protection. The Low Pick Up Layup drill is designed for guards and wings who need to navigate through traffic without getting stripped by help-side defenders. By simulating a high-intensity attack from the top of the key, this drill forces you to develop the elite footwork, ball security, and soft touch required to score consistently over shot-blockers in game situations.

How to Perform This Drill

  1. Setup: Place one minute on the game clock. Start at the top of the key in an athletic stance, ready to attack.
  2. Initiate: Execute an "auto-pass" by spinning the basketball out in front of you. Chase it down, catch on balance, and immediately rip into a front or rear pivot to face the basket.
  3. Attack: Drive hard toward the rim using no more than two dribbles. Simulate attacking a defender or "big man" in the paint.
  4. Execute: As you gather the ball, perform a "low pick up"—scooping the ball below your knees to keep it under the defender's hands—and finish with a layup.
  5. Reset: Grab your rebound out of the net, sprint back to the top of the key, and immediately perform your next auto-pass.
  6. Goal: Alternate driving left and right. Aim to score at least 8 points (4 made baskets) before the minute expires.

Why This Drill Works

In a real game, defenders are taught to "dig" or swipe down at the ball as you gather for a layup. If you bring the ball up through your torso, you are exposing it to strips and deflections. This drill conditions you to utilize the low pick up, keeping the basketball near the floor until the final moment of extension, which neutralizes the defender's reach. Furthermore, by adding a time constraint and a rebound-to-sprint transition, you are training your cardiovascular endurance and forcing your body to maintain fine motor skills while fatigued.

Pro Tips

  • Scrape the Floor: When you gather the ball, exaggerate the motion. Imagine you are scraping your knuckles against the hardwood. The lower the ball, the harder it is for a defender to reach.
  • Vary Your Pivots: Don't rely on the same footwork every time. Alternate between front pivots (opening up to the rim) and rear pivots (turning your back to protect) to become an unpredictable scorer.
  • Game Speed Only: The clock is your opponent. Do not jog back to the top of the key after a make. Sprint to the starting spot to maximize your reps and simulate transition offense intensity.
  • Sell the Drive: Use your eyes and head to fake out the imaginary defender. A subtle look-off before the low scoop can freeze a shot-blocker just long enough for you to finish.
