Coach Dan

Coach Dan Speaks:

Master the Drop Step Up and Under: Dominate the Low Post

This drill is a fundamental essential for forwards and centers looking to expand their scoring arsenal in the paint. The Drop Step Up and Under is not just about shooting; it is a drill focused on elite footwork, body control, and the patience required to score against aggressive defenders. By mastering this counter move, you learn to exploit a defender's over-reaction to your baseline drive, turning their defensive intensity into an easy scoring opportunity for you.

How to Perform This Drill

  1. Setup: Position yourself on the low block with your back to the basket, visualizing a defender leaning on your back.
  2. Catch: Flick the basketball to yourself to simulate an entry pass, landing in a strong, wide jump stop.
  3. Drop Step: Immediately pivot on your inside foot and drop step aggressively toward the baseline, taking one hard dribble to power through the contact.
  4. The Fake: Once you reach your destination, do not shoot immediately. Instead, keep your pivot foot planted and execute a hard pump fake (the "up") to get the defender in the air.
  5. The Under: Step through with your non-pivot leg, moving under the defender's arms while protecting the ball.
  6. Finish: Rise up strong and finish with a hook shot or layup, ensuring you look up at the rim upon release.

Why This Drill Works

In game situations, good defenders are taught to cut off the baseline drive. This drill works because it uses the defender's momentum against them; when they slide fast to stop your drop step, they become susceptible to the up-fake. By drilling this sequence, you develop the muscle memory to keep the ball high—above your waist and away from stripping hands—while maintaining the balance necessary to absorb contact and finish. It teaches the critical concept of "playing off two feet," allowing you to remain in control while chaos happens around you.

Pro Tips

  • Sell with Your Eyes: On the pump fake, your eyes must look at the rim. If you don't look up, the defender won't jump, and the move loses its effectiveness.
  • Chin the Ball: Keep the basketball chinned with your elbows out during the drop step. If you dip the ball below your waist, smaller guards will strip it before you can get into your move.
  • Change Your Pace: Use a change of speed to deceive the defense. Explode into the drop step (fast), pause for the fake (slow), and explode into the finish (fast).
  • Stay Low: Maintain a low center of gravity throughout the pivot and step-through. The lower player wins the leverage battle in the post.
