Master Layups off the Dribble: Attack the Rim with Confidence

Finishing at the rim is a non-negotiable skill for any serious scorer, and it starts with the fundamentals. This drill focuses on attacking downhill from the wing, simulating a straight-line drive past a defender to the basket. It is a critical exercise for players of all levels to synchronize their ball handling with finishing footwork, ensuring you can convert high-percentage shots when the lane opens up.

How to Perform This Drill

  1. Setup: Start at the wing on the three-point line in an athletic, split stance. If you are on the right wing, place your left foot forward to load your hips for an explosive start.
  2. Attack: Drive the ball hard toward the basket with a strong "pound" dribble. Focus on getting downhill immediately rather than drifting sideways.
  3. Gather: As you approach the paint, pick up the ball firmly with two hands to protect it, stepping into your one-two footwork (right-left for a right-handed layup).
  4. Execute: Jump off your inside foot and extend fully, finishing with an overhand layup off the backboard.
  5. Reset: Grab your rebound and sprint back to the starting spot.
  6. Repetition: Complete 10 made layups on the right side, then switch to the left wing and execute 10 reps finishing with your left hand.

Why This Drill Works

In a real game, static layups rarely exist; you must create momentum from a standstill or a catch to beat your defender. This drill trains your ability to accelerate instantly from the perimeter to the paint, bridging the critical gap between ball handling and finishing. By focusing on the "downhill" mentality and repetition, you develop the muscle memory, body control, and spatial awareness required to absorb contact and finish consistently in traffic.

Pro Tips

  • Protect the Rock: Keep the ball on your outside hip during the drive to shield it from defenders trying to swipe or reach in.
  • Aim High: Don't just toss the ball at the rim; aim for the top corner of the square on the backboard to soften your touch and increase your make percentage.
  • Simulate Game Speed: Once you have the footwork down, attack the basket at full velocity. If you practice at 50% effort, you will fail at 100% speed in a game.
  • Eyes Up Early: Locate the rim as soon as you gather the ball. Players who stare at the floor during the drive often miss the layup or miss an open teammate in the corner.
