Mikan variations facing the half-court line 2

How To Perform This Basketball Drill

On the right side of the basket, make a layup with the right hand off the backboard jumping off your left leg.
On the left side of the basket, make a layup with the left hand off the backboard jumping off your right leg (outside foot — inside hand).
You’ve made 10 layups.
Teach points: As you improve, practice finishing from different spots and positions on the backboard by adding more spin to the basketball.
Make sure you’re getting as much height as possible on each jump.

Coach Dan Speaks:

Master Mikan Variations Facing the Half-Court Line 2 for Elite Finishing

This advanced finishing drill takes the classic Mikan routine and adapts it for modern, game-speed situations where standard footwork isn't an option. Designed for guards and post players alike, this variation focuses on "wrong-footed" finishing—specifically jumping off the same foot as your shooting hand while facing the perimeter. By mastering this challenging coordination, you improve your touch around the rim, develop ambidexterity, and learn to finish awkwardly when the defense takes away your primary rhythm.

How to Perform This Drill

  1. Setup: Position yourself directly underneath the rim, with your chest facing the half-court line. Keep the ball chin-high and your feet active.
  2. Position Right: Step out towards the right side of the hoop. Unlike a standard layup, you are preparing for a same-foot, same-hand finish.
  3. Execute (Right): Jump explosively off your right leg while simultaneously extending your right arm to finish. Use the backboard to bank the shot in.
  4. Rebound: Catch the ball out of the net high above your shoulders—do not bring the ball down to your waist.
  5. Reset: Immediately transition to the left side without pausing.
  6. Execute (Left): Step to the left, jump off your left leg, and finish with a left-handed layup off the glass.
  7. Repeat: Continue this alternating pattern in a continuous, rhythmic motion for the prescribed reps or time.

Why This Drill Works

In a real game, you rarely get perfect footwork in a crowded paint. This drill specifically targets your ability to disrupt a shot blocker's timing by utilizing a "quick release" mechanism found in same-foot, same-hand finishes. By forcing you to jump off the outside leg (the right leg on the right side) while facing up-court, it simulates recovering a rebound or receiving a dump-off pass where you must go straight up without resetting your feet. It builds elite core stability and soft touch, ensuring you can score even when your body positioning isn't ideal.

Pro Tips

  • Don't Dip the Ball: Keep the basketball at shoulder level or higher after every catch. Bringing the ball down exposes it to guards digging in for steals and slows down your second jump.
  • Target the Top Corner: On your finish, focus your eyes on the top corner of the square on the backboard. Using the glass correctly allows you to put the necessary spin on the ball to counteract your momentum.
  • Explode Upward: Do not settle for a flat-footed layup. Treat every rep like a game situation by trying to reach your maximum vertical height; this prevents your shot from being swatted by trailing defenders.
  • Master the Spin: Once you are comfortable with the basic motion, apply "English" (spin) to the ball. Twist your wrist slightly inward upon release to soften the bounce off the backboard.
