Master the 1-Step Layup: Explosive Finishing at the Rim
The 1-Step Layup is a fundamental finishing drill designed to improve your touch, footwork, and ability to score quickly in the paint. This drill specifically targets your ability to explode upward off a single step, simulating game situations where you beat your defender and need to finish before the help defense rotates over. By stripping away the run-up, we focus entirely on your body control, ball protection, and the mechanics of a soft release off the backboard.
How to Perform This Drill
- Setup: Position yourself on the right side of the lane, near the low block, facing away from the basket (looking toward half-court).
- Execute: Drop your hips and execute a hard pound dribble as you pivot and sweep your body around the block toward the basket.
- Gather: As you turn the corner, firmly gather the basketball with two hands to protect it from swiping defenders.
- Step: Plant your left foot (inside foot) explosively toward the rim. This is your power step.
- Finish: Drive your right knee into the air and extend your right arm fully to shoot an overhand layup off the glass.
- Repeat: Successfully make 10 layups in a row before switching to the left side (stepping with the right foot and finishing with the left hand).
Why This Drill Works
In a real game, you rarely get a clear, open runway to the hoop. This drill builds the "quick finish" mechanic required when you catch the ball in the post or turn the corner tight off a screen. By limiting yourself to just one step, you are forced to generate vertical power from a standstill rather than relying on forward momentum. This improves your vertical leap, balance, and ability to absorb contact while maintaining the soft touch necessary to put the ball through the hoop.
Pro Tips
- Eyes on the Target: Locate the top corner of the square on the backboard early. Your body follows your eyes, so lock in on your target before you release the ball.
- Chin the Ball: On the gather, keep the ball high and strong (chin level). Do not dip the ball down to your waist, or smaller guards will strip it in a game situation.
- High Release: Extend your arm fully at the peak of your jump. You want to release the ball at the highest possible point to make it difficult for shot blockers to reach.
- Game Speed: Once you have the footwork down, execute the turn and dribble at full intensity. Practice how you play.
