Coach Dan Speaks:

Master Rejecting the Screen: Dominate the Baseline

This intermediate offensive drill is designed for guards and wings who want to expand their scoring options out of the Side Pick and Roll (PnR). By learning to reject the screen and aggressively attack the baseline, you punish defenders who try to cheat over the top or jump the passing lane. This sequence sharpens your ball-handling agility, improves your ability to read defensive positioning, and builds the balance required for elite midrange shooting.

How to Perform This Drill

  1. Setup: Start on the wing (free throw line extended) with the basketball, simulating a Side PnR scenario. Imagine a teammate setting a screen toward the middle of the floor.
  2. Sell the Screen: Take one hard dribble toward the middle to force your defender to shift their weight and prepare to fight over the screen.
  3. Reject and Attack: Immediately change direction using a crossover or a quick push-cross, rejecting the screen and driving hard toward the baseline.
  4. Create Space: Take one or two aggressive dribbles downhill to clear the defender, then decelerate into a controlled jump stop or 1-2 footwork.
  5. Execute the Shot: Rise up under control and shoot a midrange jumper, focusing on a high release point.
  6. Repetition: Make 5 shots attacking the baseline from the right wing, then switch sides and make 5 shots attacking from the left wing.

Why This Drill Works

In game situations, smart defenders will often anticipate the Pick and Roll and try to beat you to the spot. This drill works because it teaches you to use that defensive aggression against your opponent. By rejecting the screen, you catch the defense out of position, opening up a clear lane to the basket or an uncontested midrange jumper. Furthermore, practicing the transition from an explosive baseline drive to a vertical jump shot significantly improves your core stability and balance, ensuring you don't drift on your shot during crunch time.

Pro Tips

  • Use Your Eyes: Before you make your move, look at the imaginary screener. This freezes the defender and sells the idea that you are using the screen, making the rejection more effective.
  • Stay Low: When you change direction to reject the screen, drop your hips. The lower player wins the leverage battle and explodes past the defense faster.
  • Tight Turn: When attacking the baseline, keep your line tight to the paint. If you drift too far toward the sideline, you cut off your own shooting angle and make the shot more difficult.
  • Stick the Landing: Focus on landing on balance after every shot. If you are falling away or drifting sideways, you are sacrificing accuracy for speed.
