Coach Dan Speaks:

Master the Side Step Pull-Up: Create Space and Score

In modern basketball, the ability to create your own shot is what separates role players from primary scorers. The Side Step Pull-Up is an essential offensive weapon designed to help you generate separation from tight defenders in the mid-range without relying on a screen. This drill focuses on integrating elite footwork with shooting mechanics, allowing you to shift the defense laterally and rise up with confidence from 10-15 feet.

How to Perform This Drill

  1. Setup: Position yourself on the perimeter or wing, approximately 10-15 feet from the basket. Assume a low, athletic stance with the ball in your hands, ready to attack.
  2. Engage the Dribble: Begin with a hard, active dribble. Simulate driving or sizing up a defender. Keep the ball protected and your eyes up.
  3. Execute the Side Step: As the ball comes back up from the floor, push explosively off your inside foot to hop laterally (sideways) into open space. Your goal is to cover ground quickly to escape the defender's reach.
  4. Gather and Stabilize: Land on balance with your feet shoulder-width apart. Gather the ball cleanly into your shooting pocket simultaneously with your landing.
  5. Shoot: Rise straight up—maintaining verticality—and execute your jump shot. Focus on a high release point and a smooth follow-through.
  6. Reset: Retrieve your rebound and return to the starting spot. Complete 5 reps moving to the right, then switch and perform 5 reps moving to the left.

Why This Drill Works

This drill bridges the gap between stationary shooting and live game action. In a real game, defenders will often cut off your straight-line drive; the side step allows you to change the angle of attack instantly, creating a window of visibility for your shot. By practicing this lateral movement repeatedly, you train your neuromuscular system to maintain a consistent shooting form even when your momentum is carrying you sideways, which is critical for high-percentage scoring.

Pro Tips

  • Stick the Landing: Do not drift or fade on your shot. When you side step, focus on "sticking" the landing so you can jump straight up and down. Drifting creates inconsistent arc and accuracy.
  • Push Off Hard: The separation comes from your legs, not the dribble. Explosively push off the foot opposite to the direction you are going to create maximum distance from the defender.
  • Quick Pickup: Minimize the time between your last dribble and your shot. The faster you can transfer the ball from the bounce to your set point, the less time the defense has to recover and contest.
  • Eyes on the Rim: Locate your target early. As soon as you initiate the side step, your eyes should lock onto the rim to improve your depth perception and focus.
