Coach Dan Speaks:

The Free Throw Golf Drill: Master Shooting Precision

Free Throw Golf is a premier shooting drill designed to transform average free throw shooters into automatic scorers at the line. Unlike standard shooting practice where a make is simply a make, this drill forces you to strive for perfection by rewarding swishes and penalizing "lucky" bounces. It is an essential drill for players of all levels who want to refine their shooting mechanics, develop a soft touch, and simulate the psychological pressure of hitting clutch free throws in the fourth quarter.

How to Perform This Drill

  1. Establish your baseline: Step up to the free throw line with your standard game-ready posture. Your starting score is 0.
  2. Execute the set: Shoot two free throws in a row. Treat every repetition with the same focus you would apply in a real game.
  3. Calculate the make: Scoring is based on precision. Subtract 3 points for a swish (nothing but net), subtract 2 points if the ball hits the rim and goes in, and subtract 1 point if it banks off the backboard and goes in.
  4. Penalize the miss: If you miss the shot completely, add 1 point to your current score.
  5. Finish the round: Continue shooting sets of two until you reach the target score of -21. If you are playing with a partner, the first player to reach -21 wins.

Why This Drill Works

This drill works because it utilizes "aim small, miss small" psychology to tighten your shooting mechanics. By placing a higher value on the swish (-3) than a rim-make (-2), you are subconsciously training your brain and body to execute with the perfect arc and rotation required for the ball to drop cleanly through the net. Additionally, the penalty for missing creates a consequence-driven environment, forcing you to maintain mental composure and focus when your score starts slipping in the wrong direction.

Pro Tips

  • Target the loops: Don't just aim generally at the rim; lock your eyes on the specific net hooks (loops) on the back of the rim to narrow your target and increase your swish percentage.
  • Respect the routine: Do not rush through the shots just to lower your score. Perform your full pre-shot routine—dribbles, breath, and spin—before every single attempt to build muscle memory.
  • Hold your follow-through: To get consistent swishes, you need consistent arc. Keep your "gooseneck" follow-through up until the ball hits the floor to ensure optimal trajectory.
  • Reset after misses: If you miss a shot and add points to your score, step completely off the line and take a deep breath to reset your mental state before stepping back in.
