Coach Dan

Coach Dan Speaks:

Master the Basic Curl: Essential Footwork for Catch-and-Shoot Scoring

In modern basketball, moving without the ball is just as important as having it in your hands. The Basic Curls drill is designed for guards and wings looking to sharpen their footwork and shooting mechanics when coming off screens. By simulating a game-speed catch-and-shoot scenario, you build the muscle memory required to curl tight around a defender and punish the defense for trailing the play.

How to Perform This Drill

  1. Position: Start on the wing or elbow area, roughly 10-15 feet from the hoop, facing the sideline.
  2. Simulate: Spin or flick the basketball out to yourself to mimic a pass arriving from the top of the key.
  3. Chase: Move towards the ball aggressively, preparing your body to turn.
  4. Plant: As you catch the ball, plant your inside foot (the foot closest to the basket) firmly on the floor.
  5. Curl: Swing your outside leg around tightly, squaring your shoulders and hips to the rim in one fluid motion.
  6. Elevate: Rise immediately into your jump shot, transferring energy from your curl directly into your lift.
  7. Repeat: Execute 5 made shots on the right side, then switch to the left side to master footwork in both directions.

Why This Drill Works

This drill isolates the specific footwork needed when a defender is chasing you over a screen (like a down screen or pin-down). By focusing on the "inside foot curl," you reduce the time it takes to transition from the catch to the shot, eliminating wasted motion that gives defenders time to recover. It teaches you to square your body in mid-air and land on balance, translating directly to higher shooting percentages in dynamic game situations where you don't have time to set your feet slowly.

Pro Tips

  • Stay Low: Catch the ball with your knees bent and hips dropped. If you catch standing straight up, you lose explosiveness and time trying to load your legs.
  • Tighten the Turn: Imagine a defender is right on your hip. If your curl is wide, the defender recovers; keep your turn tight to the imaginary screen.
  • Eyes on the Rim: Locate the rim with your eyes before you even finish your rotation. Early target acquisition improves accuracy.
  • Game Speed: Don't walk through the catch. Spin the ball further out so you have to sprint to it, simulating the intensity of a fourth-quarter possession.
