Master the X-Out Layup: Elite Finishing & Agility

The X-Out Layup is a high-intensity finishing drill designed to improve your ability to change direction, attack downhill, and finish at the rim with either hand. This drill bridges the gap between ball handling and scoring, simulating the specific footwork required to turn the corner on a defender and get to the bucket. It is essential for guards and wings looking to develop a "slasher" mentality and improve their coordination in traffic.

How to Perform This Drill

  1. Setup: Start on the right low block with the basketball in a triple-threat stance, facing the baseline.
  2. Cross: Explosively dribble the ball diagonally across the paint toward the opposite (left) elbow.
  3. Turn: As you reach the elbow, plant your outside foot hard to sharply change direction and turn your body toward the rim.
  4. Attack: Take one strong, aggressive dribble downhill toward the basket, simulating a drive through an open lane.
  5. Finish: Explode upward off the proper foot and finish with a left-handed layup high off the glass.
  6. Reset: Snatch the ball out of the net before it hits the floor, sprint to the left block, and immediately repeat the sequence going toward the right elbow.

Why This Drill Works

In a real game, straight-line drives are rare; you constantly have to navigate around help defense and weave through traffic. The X-Out Layup forces you to master the "curl" action, teaching your body how to maintain balance and speed while executing sharp changes of direction. By restricting you to minimal dribbles after the turn, it conditions you to be efficient with your movement, ensuring you get from the perimeter to the rim before the defense can recover.

Pro Tips

  • Stay Low: Keep your center of gravity low when you turn the corner at the elbow. The lower player wins the leverage battle, and staying low helps you explode toward the hoop.
  • Tight Turns: Avoid "looping" or drifting wide around the elbow. Imagine you are rubbing shoulders with a screener or a defender; the tighter your cut, the harder you are to guard.
  • Eyes Up: Keep your eyes on the rim as soon as you make your turn. Spotting your target early improves your finishing percentage and helps you read potential secondary defenders.
  • Mix Finishes: Once you master the standard layup, vary your finishing package. Practice overhand finishes, reverse layups, and floaters to build a complete scoring arsenal.
