Master the In & Out Crossover: Create Elite Separation
The In & Out Crossover is a staple move for any serious guard looking to break down defenders and get into the paint. This ball-handling drill focuses on combining two fundamental skills—the "in and out" dribble (misdirection) and the crossover (change of direction)—into one fluid, explosive motion. It is designed for players who want to improve their handle, agility, and ability to shift a defender's center of gravity to create open scoring opportunities.
How to Perform This Drill
- Assume the Stance: Start in a low, athletic stance with your feet shoulder-width apart and your knees bent. Keep your chest up and your eyes forward, scanning the floor.
- Start the Dribble: Begin with a hard pound dribble in your right hand. On the next bounce, manipulate the ball for the "In & Out" move.
- Execute the In & Out: Rotate your hand to the outside of the ball and push it toward the midline of your body, then quickly rotate your hand to the inside and pull it back out. Do not carry the ball; keep your hand on top or strictly on the side.
- Sell the Fake: As you push the ball in, jab your opposite foot and shift your head and shoulders as if you are driving in that direction. This body movement is crucial to freeze the defender.
- Snap the Crossover: Immediately after pulling the ball back out, execute a low, hard crossover dribble from your right hand to your left hand. The ball should pass below your knees.
- Explode: Once the ball hits your left hand, push off your back foot and explode into a drive or a jump shot. Reset and repeat for 10 reps, then switch to the left hand.
Why This Drill Works
In basketball, straight-line speed is useful, but deception is lethal. This drill works because it manipulates the defender's balance and timing through "shifting." The initial In & Out move mimics a drive, forcing the defender to shift their weight to cut you off. By immediately countering with a crossover, you attack the space they just vacated. This sequence trains your neuromuscular system to handle the ball violently while maintaining body control, translating directly to high-pressure game situations where creating space is essential.
Pro Tips
- Sell With Your Eyes: Your defender is watching your eyes. When you make the "In & Out" move, look in the direction of the fake. If your eyes don't sell the drive, the defender won't bite.
- Change Your Pace: The most effective moves have a rhythm change. Perform the setup dribble slowly, then explode into the crossover at 100% game speed. Lull them to sleep, then blow by them.
- Keep It Low: The higher you dribble, the easier it is to steal. During the crossover phase, the ball should be below your knees to minimize the time it spends out of your hand.
- Engage Your Core: Stability starts in the midsection. Keep your core tight to maintain balance during the rapid shift of weight from the fake to the crossover.
