Coach Dan Speaks:

Maximize Your Reach: The Height Without the Shoes Drill

We say it all the time: you can't teach height, but you can teach length. The "Height Without the Shoes" drill is a specialized finishing drill designed to help undersized guards and forwards score over rim protectors by maximizing vertical extension. By forcing you to release the ball at the absolute apex of your jump—utilizing your full wingspan—you learn to play "taller" than your measurements and finish effectively in heavy traffic.

How to Perform This Drill

  1. Setup: Start at the elbow or the dotted line in the paint with a basketball; imagine a taller defender is rotating over to block you.
  2. Attack: Take one hard, aggressive dribble toward the basket to simulate a drive through the lane.
  3. Gather: Come to a controlled two-foot jump stop (power layup) or an explosive one-foot takeoff, depending on your specific game focus.
  4. Extend: Explode upward and extend your shooting arm fully straight up; your goal is to get the ball as high as possible against the backboard before releasing it.
  5. Release: At the very peak of your jump—your maximum vertical reach—kiss the ball softly off the glass.
  6. Recover: Grab the rebound out of the net without letting it hit the floor and immediately reset for the next rep.

Why This Drill Works

In a real game, "short-arming" a layup is a recipe for getting blocked. This drill overrides the natural tendency to shrink under pressure by building the muscle memory required for full vertical extension. By releasing the ball at the apex of your jump rather than on the way up, you effectively increase your release height by several inches, making it significantly harder for shot blockers to time their defense without fouling.

Pro Tips

  • High Pickup: Keep the ball above your shoulders during the gather phase; bringing the ball down to your waist exposes it to guards stripping the ball.
  • Eyes Up: Lock your eyes on the top corner of the square on the backboard early; where your eyes go, your body follows.
  • Off-Hand Protection: Use your non-shooting arm to create a "shield" or seal off the defender, protecting your body while you extend for the finish.
  • Stick the Landing: Focus on landing on two feet with balance; this protects your ankles and allows you to immediately pursue an offensive rebound if you miss.
