The Crazy Five Finisher: Develop Unstoppable Rim Scoring
The Crazy Five Finisher is a high-intensity finishing drill designed to expand your scoring package around the basket while building game-specific conditioning. Ideal for guards and slashing forwards, this drill forces you to execute five distinct finishing moves in rapid succession, simulating the chaotic nature of driving through traffic against rotating defenders.
How to Perform This Drill
- Setup: Start at the top of the key with a basketball. You will be attacking the basket five consecutive times with no rest between reps.
- Drive 1 (Speed Layup): Explode downhill and finish with a high-speed, one-hand extension layup off the glass.
- Reset: Sprint to retrieve the ball out of the net (do not let it hit the floor), dribble out to the wing or top, and immediately turn to attack.
- Drive 2 (Reverse): Attack the lane and finish with a reverse layup on the opposite side of the rim, using the net for protection.
- Drive 3 (Euro-Step): Drive hard, plant your outside foot to freeze the defender, step laterally across the lane, and finish softly.
- Drive 4 (Floater): Attack the paint, stop on two feet in the middle of the lane, and release a high-arching teardrop over an imaginary shot blocker.
- Drive 5 (Power Finish): Drive into the restricted area, come to a jump stop, pump fake to shift the defense, and explode up for a strong, two-handed power layup.
Why This Drill Works
This drill bridges the gap between static layup lines and live-game scoring by introducing variety and cardiovascular fatigue. By cycling through different finishes—extension, protection, lateral movement, touch, and power—you train your nervous system to instinctively choose the right solution for specific defensive coverages. Furthermore, forcing you to execute technical moves while winded simulates the physical demand of finishing strong in the fourth quarter.
Pro Tips
- Visualize the defense: Don't just go through the motions; imagine a secondary defender rotating over to block you, forcing you to adjust your release angle.
- Change speeds: Effective finishing isn't just about speed; use hesitation dribbles at the start of your drive to freeze your imaginary defender before exploding to the rim.
- Pick up points: Vary where you pick up the ball. Sometimes gather low to rip through contact, other times gather high to keep it away from stripping hands.
- Spin the ball: On your reverse layups and finishes off the glass, focus on applying the correct spin so the ball softens upon contact with the backboard.
