Coach Dan

Coach Dan Speaks:

Master the Challenging Number of Makes in a Row Drill

This high-volume shooting drill is designed to forge elite consistency and ironclad mental toughness in players of all levels. By forcing you to restart your count after every miss, this exercise moves beyond simple repetition and introduces the psychological pressure necessary to become a clutch shooter. Whether you are a perimeter sharpshooter or a mid-range specialist, mastering this drill transforms your shooting mechanics from conscious effort into automatic muscle memory.

How to Perform This Drill

  1. Select your spot: Choose a specific location on the court—such as the free-throw line, the corner 3, or the elbow—where you want to improve your consistency.
  2. Set your target: Establish a goal based on your current level: 10 consecutive makes for middle school, 20 for high school, and 30 for college or professional level.
  3. Establish your base: Get into a triple-threat stance or a ready shooting position with your feet shoulder-width apart and knees bent.
  4. Execute the shot: Shoot the ball with perfect form, focusing on a high release point and a snapped wrist on the follow-through.
  5. Track the streak: Count your makes out loud; if you miss a shot, your count immediately resets to zero, regardless of how close you were to the goal.
  6. Persistence is key: Continue shooting from the same spot until you hit your target number of consecutive makes without a single miss.

Why This Drill Works

This drill bridges the gap between practice shooting and game-time performance by introducing a consequence for missing: the reset. This structure utilizes the concept of progressive pressure; making the 19th shot of a 20-shot goal simulates the psychological weight of a game-winning free throw or a buzzer-beater. Physically, the high volume of repetition grooves your shooting stroke, ensuring your lift, set point, and release remain identical every time, which is the hallmark of a great shooter.

Pro Tips

  • Hold the follow-through: Keep your shooting hand up until the ball hits the floor; this ensures you aren't pulling the string on the ball prematurely due to fatigue or rushing.
  • Engage your legs: As you get deeper into a streak, your arms will naturally tire—compensate by driving more power through your glutes and quads to keep your arc consistent.
  • Narrow your focus: Don't just aim for the rim; aim for a specific loop on the net or the hooks on the back of the rim to increase your precision.
  • Breathe through the pressure: When you are two or three shots away from your goal, take a deep breath to lower your heart rate and reset your mental focus before firing.
