Coach Dan Speaks:

Master the Hop Down with Quick Pick Up: Develop an Explosive Release

Great shooters don't just rely on arm strength; they rely on efficient energy transfer from the ground up. The Hop Down with Quick Pick Up is a fundamental shooting drill designed to synchronize your footwork with your shot pocket, creating a faster, more fluid release. This drill is essential for players at every level who want to minimize the time between catching the ball and getting a shot off, mimicking the pressure of real game situations where defenders are closing out fast.

How to Perform This Drill

  1. Setup: Position yourself 10 to 12 feet from the basket. Hold the basketball in your weak hand (off-hand) with your opposite foot split back behind you, keeping your knees slightly bent.
  2. Load: Execute a quick "hop down" by dropping your hips and snapping your back foot forward so both feet land simultaneously in your shooting stance.
  3. Gather: As your feet hit the floor, immediately bring your strong hand to the ball to form a perfect shooting pocket.
  4. Fire: Explode upward instantly—using the elastic energy from your legs—and release the ball at the apex of your jump with a high follow-through.
  5. Reset: Complete 5 reps starting with the ball in your weak hand, then switch sides to start with the ball in your strong hand to ensure balanced development.

Why This Drill Works

This drill isolates the most critical component of a jump shot: the kinetic chain. By forcing you to "hop down" into a loaded stance, you are training your body to generate power from your glutes and quads rather than your upper body. This specific movement pattern reduces the "dip" time in your shot mechanics, allowing for a quicker release that makes it difficult for defenders to block your shot. It also builds the neurological connection between your feet settling and your hands gathering, which is the secret to consistency.

Pro Tips

  • Drop, Don't Jump: Despite the name, you shouldn't jump high into the air during the setup. Think about dropping your hips quickly to the floor to load your legs like a spring.
  • Hand Placement: When bringing your guide hand to the ball, ensure your fingers are spread and you establish a "T" position immediately. Fumbling the gather kills the rhythm of the shot.
  • Stick the Landing: After you release the ball, hold your follow-through and land in the exact same spot you jumped from. Drifting forward or sideways indicates a lack of core balance.
  • Speed Up: Once you master the footwork, increase the speed of the pick-up. Your goal is to make the motion from the "hop" to the release one seamless, fluid action.
