The Quick Pick Up: Develop a Faster, More Consistent Release
The Quick Pick Up is a foundational shooting drill designed to tighten your mechanics and accelerate your gather speed. Ideal for players of all levels—from youth beginners to pros refining their touch—this drill isolates the crucial moment when you bring the ball into your shooting pocket. By focusing on the synchronization of your lower body and hand placement, you will build the muscle memory needed for a lethal catch-and-shoot game.
How to Perform This Drill
- Setup: Stand approximately 8 to 10 feet from the basket. Hold the basketball in your weak hand (guide hand) with your shooting foot forward and your non-shooting foot dropped back in a staggered stance.
- Load: Keep your knees bent in an athletic stance and your eyes locked on the rim. The ball should be held loosely at waist level, ready to be moved.
- Gather: In one quick, explosive motion, step your back foot forward to square your base while simultaneously snapping the ball into your shooting hand (the pocket).
- Execute: Rise up immediately into your shot without dipping the ball. Ensure your guide hand meets the ball smoothly as you lift into your release point.
- Finish: Hold your follow-through high until the ball hits the floor. Complete 5 repetitions, then switch your starting hand configuration to challenge your coordination.
Why This Drill Works
In a real game, you rarely have the luxury of setting your feet slowly. The Quick Pick Up forces you to synchronize your footwork with your hand placement, eliminating wasted motion in your shot path known as "negative motion." By isolating the "gather" phase, you train your body to find balance instantly and align your kinetic chain, allowing you to get your shot off over closing defenders with repeatable accuracy.
Pro Tips
- Snap, Don't Slap: When bringing the ball to your shooting hand, the transfer should be firm but quiet. A loud slapping sound indicates a lack of control; aim for a seamless, silent transfer into the pocket.
- Match the Timing: Your back foot should hit the floor at the exact same moment the ball hits your shooting pocket. This rhythm is the secret to elite energy transfer.
- Stay Low: Do not stand up straight before the shot. Maintain your low athletic stance during the setup so you can explode upward through your legs, not just your arms.
- Freeze the Finish: On every rep, check your landing. If you are falling forward, backward, or sideways, your core balance during the "pick up" phase needs adjustment.
