This drill focuses on one of the most effective scoring tools in modern basketball: transitioning from a live dribble into a controlled jump shot. Designed for guards and wings who need to create their own offense, this exercise seamlessly blends ball-handling agility with shooting mechanics. By mastering this sequence, you will learn to generate space against tight defenders and knock down shots with rhythm and confidence.

How to Perform This Drill

  1. Setup: Position yourself on the perimeter, approximately 15 to 18 feet from the basket (top of the key or wing).
  2. Attack: Start with a low stance and take one or two hard dribbles directly toward the basket to simulate driving at a defender.
  3. Execute: Plant your lead foot hard and snap the ball between your legs, transitioning your momentum from forward to stationary.
  4. Gather: As the ball hits your opposite hand, immediately bring your feet into your shooting base (using a 1-2 step or a quick hop).
  5. Elevate: Rise straight up into your jump shot, ensuring your energy transfers vertically rather than drifting sideways.
  6. Repeat: Execute this move until you make 5 shots, then switch sides to work on your opposite hand.

In a real game, you rarely get open catch-and-shoot opportunities without working for them. This drill replicates the exact game situation where a defender cuts off your drive, forcing you to counter.   • Stay Low: Maintain a low center of gravity during the between-the-legs move. If you stand up straight before you gather, you lose explosiveness and give the defense time to recover.
  • Quick Pickup: Focus on the speed of your gather. The faster you can get the ball from the dribble into your shooting pocket, the less chance a defender has to strip the ball.
  • Stick the Landing: After you shoot, hold your follow-through and land in the same spot you jumped from. Drifting forward or backward usually indicates a lack of balance on the gather.
