Coach Dan

Coach Dan Speaks:

Master the Pound, In-n-Out, V-Dribble Complex

Great ball handlers don't just dribble; they manipulate the defense with rhythm and misdirection. This stationary ball-handling complex combines three fundamental actions to help you develop elite ball control, hand speed, and the ability to shift gears instantly. Designed for guards and wings, this sequence trains you to move the ball aggressively while maintaining a low, stable base, simulating the setup moves used to break down defenders in isolation situations.

How to Perform This Drill

  1. Establish your base: Drop into a low, athletic stance with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Keep your chest up and your off-hand active (arm bar) to protect the space.
  2. Pound the ball: Execute one hard, aggressive pound dribble directly by your foot. The ball should not rise higher than your hip.
  3. Execute the In-n-Out: Immediately following the pound, manipulate your hand over the top of the ball to perform a quick "in-n-out" dribble. Use a circular motion to fake a crossover toward the middle of your body before pulling it back to the starting side.
  4. Snap the V-Dribble: Without pausing, transition into a V-dribble (windshield wiper). Snap the ball diagonally across the front of your body to your opposite knee and quickly pull it back to the starting side with the same hand.
  5. Reset and Repeat: Establish a rhythm and perform the sequence continuously for 30 seconds before switching to your opposite hand.

Why This Drill Works

This drill is effective because it forces you to rapidly change your hand placement on the basketball—from the top (pound) to the side (in-n-out) to the front-angle (V-dribble). This constant manipulation improves your "time on the ball," giving you greater control over where the ball goes and how fast it gets there. In a game scenario, this sequence mimics the hesitation and shifting used to freeze a defender before exploding into a drive or a pull-up jumper.

Pro Tips

  • Pound the rock: Don't be gentle with the basketball. Dribble with maximum force to reduce the time the ball is out of your hand; the harder you dribble, the quicker you can make your next move.
  • Sell the fake: On the in-n-out dribble, you must sell the move with your entire body. Shift your head and shoulders toward the middle of the floor to make the defender believe you are crossing over.
  • Keep your eyes up: Do not look at the ball. Fix your gaze on the rim or scan the court to simulate reading the defense while executing the move.
  • Stay low: Avoid bobbing up and down with the ball. Your hips should remain at a consistent, low level throughout the entire drill to maintain balance and explosiveness.
